Head of Respiratory ICU Unit, Dr Dahan’s message:
The Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU) at Beit Holim Meir /Meir Hospital is part of the Pulmonary Medicine Institution, a national specialisedcentre of excellence for the evaluation and treatment of all pulmonary pathologies and diseases. The Respiratory Intensive Care Unit is part of this centre, dealing with the care of critically ill patients requiring intensive care, as well as patients with acute respiratory pathologies. The unit is housed in an advanced 8-bed structure, with separate rooms for each patient, and is equipped with the world's most innovative technologies. The unit's team consists of ICU doctors, pulmonologists and ICU nurses. We provide specialized, professional treatment with a humane and compassionate approach to our patients and their families.
At the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, our Respiratory Intensive Care Unit was commissioned to care for the most severe Corona cases. To date, the lung department has treated dozens of Corona patients with varying degrees of the disease, with our ICU unit handling the most severe cases. The prolonged treatment of these Corona patients puts tremendous physical and mental strain on the unit’s well-trained and professional staff. The relentless support and loyalty of the nurses and medical staff towards the patients puts them and their families at risk. Furthermore, effective treatment demands the continued and intense study of all information available worldwide on experimental drugs and non-standard treatment methods.Be’ezrat Hashem, our efforts have been rewarded and we have been able to help most of theseverely ill patients who have been in our care and reunite them with their families.
One life-sustaining technology not yet in our hands is the ECMO machine. ECMO is a lung heart machine needed for patients who can no longer be oxygenated and stabilised in the usual way. Because of the nature of the disease, and fear of future outbreaks, we decided that we need to prepare for the future care of Corona patients as well as severely ill flu patients who will be referredto our respiratory intensive care unit.
We urgently need to acquire an ECMO and train staff to use the machine competently. The cost of purchasing the equipment and training staff is immense. We ask anyone who can, to please help in acquiring this life-savingECMO device.
Every single life saved is as if a world has been saved.
Thank you very much,
Dr David Dahan
